B. 1971, HAVANA, CUBA
Ernesto Leal (b. Havana, 1971) graduated from the Art Academy of San Alejandro, Havana, Cuba in 1990. During the 1980s he belonged to the group Arte Calle, which sought to disrupt the status quo of contemporary Cuban art through interventionist performances. In his personal practice, Leal has turned to the many functions of language – both in written and spoken form and through the employment of different media – as social and political critique.
Leal’s work has been featured in numerous museums and projects worldwide. They include: LACMA (the Los Angeles County Museum of Art), the 7th Istanbul Biennial, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, the Museum of Art and Design, San José, Costa Rica, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, New York, Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (MEIAC), Badajoz, at the University of Salamanca, Spain, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), Mexico. D.F, and the Havana Biennial, among others.
