Glenda León is an internationally recognized Cuban artist based in Havana and Madrid. She works across different media that include drawing, video art, installation, objects, and photography. León is interested in the interstices between the visible and the invisible, between sound and silence, between the ephemeral and the eternal.
León received a BA in Art History from the University of Havana, where she also studied classical ballet and philology. In 2007, she completed graduate studies at the Academy of New Media in Cologne, Germany.
León is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and has participated in many international residencies such as the Couvent des Recollets, in Paris and Fonderie Darling, in Montreal. Her work is represented in the permanent collections of the following institutions: Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada; the Museum of Fine Arts, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, among others. She was part of the Cuban Pavilion in the 55th Venice Biennial with the sound installation Music of the Spheres (2013). Her work has been exhibited internationally at the Brooklyn Museum, New York; CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco; Bronx Museum, New York; Centre d’Art Contemporain Villa du Parc, Annemasse, France; Badischen Kunstverein, Karlsruhe, Germany; City Art Museum Ljubljana, Slovenia; The Mattress Factory, Pittsburg; the museum at the Rhode Island School of Design; Nuit Blanche, Toronto, Canada; MART Museum, Rovereto, Italy; CIFO, Miami, among many others.
