Lázaro Saavedra emerged in the late 1980s and continues to be one of Cuba’s most respected (and irreverent) contemporary artists. His extensive body of work is imbued with a sense of irony and humor; an approach he consistently employs to make biting commentaries about Cuba’s social and political realities. His iconoclastic approach is revealed through his indiscriminate use of media that ranges from cartoon drawings to paintings and complex multi-media installations.
Saavedra is recognized internationally as one of Cuba’s leading conceptual artists. He has exhibited widely and his work is in numerous collections including Daros Latin America, CIFO, Mattress Factory, among others. He was one of a handful of artists to represent Cuba in the 2013 Venice Biennial.
